A theory on how hearing occurs

George Von Békesy theorized that a traveling wave energizes the Basilar Membrane. As frequencies get higher, so do the peaks of the traveling wave, increasing the stimulation of the receptors for hearing. This accounts for the recognition of sounds above 150 HZ. Humans can hear from 20to 20,000 HZ.
